Combine POPIA awareness with CPD recognition

Posted on

The Protection of Personal Information Act (PoPIA) comes into full effect from 1 July 2021. This date should come as no surprise to anyone or any business as many Sections of the Act was already in effect in 2021 and entities were given one year to ensure that all forms of processing of personal information must conform to the Act. Entities, both in the form of private and public bodies, will have to ensure compliance with the Act by 1 July 2021. As usual, many organisations are finding themselves scrambling with less than 50 days to go.

In the runup to implementation, South African organisations need to be educating themselves and their staff on the provisions of the POPI Act, the regulations and how it will affect everyone in their work environment. Training is a key aspect of your POPI Act compliance journey.

For many businesses, POPIA compliance is unknown territory as it introduces regulatory changes that will have a substantial impact on how they process and store client data.

Moonstone’s Business School of Excellence (MBSE) offers three online courses aimed at providing key information on POPIA, the data protection principles of POPIA and how to apply these principles in daily business activities. Each course focuses on different aspects of POPIA and is developed with the training needs of various employee types in mind.

The differences between the three courses are outlined in the table below:

Getting to know POPIA This is an interactive video training course for organisations to raise awareness of POPIA amongst all their employees.
Understanding POPIA This is a three-module online training course for employees that will be required to comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

The main objective of this course is to provide an understanding of why POPIA is important, what constitutes as personal information as well as when and how POPIA must be applied to protect personal information.

 Managing POPIA

This is a comprehensive three module online training course for executives or management to effectively govern the application of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) within their organisations.

The main objective of this course is to equip management with a comprehensive understanding of POPIA so that they can identify the changes that are needed in the organisation to be compliant with POPIA. Another objective is to outline the role, duties, and appointment process of the information officer to further ensure POPIA is applied and maintained throughout the organisation.

Lastly, the course aims to raise awareness of the differences of applying POPIA and the GDPR which also includes the requirements for cross-border transfers and direct marketing under POPIA.

Al three courses have also been accredited for CPD purposes.
