Still need to write your RE1 or RE5 regulatory examination? There is no need to put it off until next year. Moonstone Examination Body has dates available in November and December, giving candidates time to complete this important regulatory requirement before 2026 comes to an end.
Moonstone Examination Body delivers regulatory examinations under a mandate from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), administering the examinations in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements.
The final examination date for 2026 is 10 December, with examinations resuming on 13 January 2027. The important thing is to plan ahead. Examination dates and venues vary by province, and because bookings are handled through a live system, availability changes as candidates register. Registrations close 11 working days before the examination date.
Candidates can check the Moonstone FAIS Examination website to see which dates and venues are available.
Prepare with the FSCA guide
The RE1 and RE5 examinations test candidates’ understanding of the regulatory requirements that apply to financial services providers, key individuals and representatives. The questions are based on specified tasks and qualifying criteria, which direct candidates to the legislation and regulatory requirements they need to know. These include the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS Act) and the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FIC Act), along with other legislation and regulatory notices relevant to each examination.
The FSCA’s preparation material is a good place to start. The RE5 Preparation Material and RE1 Preparation Material set out the tasks and assessment criteria candidates need to work through, with references to the relevant legislation.
Candidates can also consult Moonstone’s Preparation Guide for Regulatory Examinations (RE1 and RE5) and make use of six free Regulatory Exam Preparation Video Modules. The videos explain how to approach preparation and use the available guidance. They are not training material.
Allowing enough time to work through the guide and the relevant legislation is an important part of preparing for the examination.
Before you arrive at the venue
Examination day is not the time to discover that you have the wrong venue details or an unacceptable form of identification. Candidates must arrive 60 minutes before the scheduled start time to complete registration and identification procedures, so it is worth checking the route and allowing enough time for the journey.
Candidates must bring valid, original identification. South African citizens may present a valid identity document, identity card or driver’s licence with a photograph. Candidates from other countries must bring a valid, original passport. Copies and certified copies are not accepted.
Check the booking confirmation carefully for the examination date, venue and session. RE1 is presented in the morning session only because of the length of the examination.
When will you receive your results?
The FSCA’s standard turnaround time for releasing examination results is 20 working days. Moonstone endeavours to mark papers and release results sooner where possible. Depending on the examination date, venue and volume of papers requiring marking, results may be available within approximately five to 10 working days.
Results are submitted to the FSCA first and released to candidates by email once receipt has been confirmed. Candidates can also access their results and, where applicable, download their certificates through the Moonstone FAIS Examination website.
