CMS training for new medical scheme trustees

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) will host a two-day induction programme for the trustees of medical schemes.

The training will take place online on 28 and 29 February, between 9am and 3pm.

The sessions will provide newly appointed trustees with guidance on:

  • compliance with the Medical Schemes Act;
  • the accreditation of brokers and healthcare providers;
  • the Prescribed Minimum Benefits;
  • complaints and adjudication procedures; and
  • the financial soundness of medical schemes.

Because of the demand for trustee training, the CMS will in future segment training interventions for newly appointed trustees into categories for open medical schemes, for closed schemes, and scheme-specific training, the regulator said.

The induction programmes will be used as a pre-requisite to register for the Advanced Leadership Programme for Trustees offered by the Gordon Institute of Business Science in collaboration with the CMS. The Advanced Leadership Programme will start in April.
