Updated | Dates for workshops on funeral insurance regulations

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority and the Prudential Authority have invited roleplayers in the funeral industry to participate in a workshop to discuss the regulations governing the distribution of funeral insurance.

This follows the publication of Joint Communication 7 in November last year, in which the Authorities acknowledged the concerns raised by the funeral parlour industry about the appropriateness and effectiveness of the current regulatory framework.

The Authorities said they have initiated a project that seeks to address the concerns relating to the distribution of funeral insurance. The project includes a review of the existing regulatory framework to evaluate any potential issues, including the potential unintended consequences arising from, among other things, the change in the definition of “group” in the Insurance Act.

An aspect of the project is stakeholder engagement through workshops. The “inputs provided during these workshops will be critical to ensure the formulation of a pragmatic and balanced approach for the future regulation and supervision of funeral insurance in South Africa”, said Joint Communication 7 of 2024.

The Authorities will host two in-person workshops this month and one online workshop in July.

Online registrations for the in-person workshops on 27 June and 30 June have closed.

Stakeholders can participate in a virtual workshop on Tuesday, 1 July, from 1pm to 4pm. It will be hosted on Microsoft Teams.

The FSCA has provided two email addresses to register for the online workshop: louisa.basitere@fsca.co.za and FSCA.funeralins@fsca.co.za

This is the link to join the workshop.

Note: This article was updated on 27 June 2025 to reflect that bookings for the in-person workshops have been closed.
