Santam to unify specialist businesses under single brand banner

Santam, South Africa’s largest short-term insurer, will consolidate its specialist insurance businesses under a single brand identity in a strategic move aimed at streamlining operations and reinforcing its market presence across Africa and select international territories.

The transition will take effect in the final quarter of 2025 and will involve the rebranding of five specialist units. These are:

  • Emerald Risk Transfer, which will become Santam Corporate Property.
  • Mirabilis Engineering Specialists, rebranded as Santam Construction & Engineering.
  • SHA Risk Specialists, transitioning to Santam Casualty; Accident & Health and Motor Fleets.
  • Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC), renamed Santam Travel Insurance.
  • Vulindlela Underwriting Managers (VUM), to be known as Santam Emerging Business.

The integration forms part of a broader alignment under Santam Specialist Solutions, the division that insures a range of complex risks across sectors such as agriculture, property, engineering, casualty, travel, aviation, and marine. These offerings extend beyond South Africa to other parts of Africa, India, south-east Asia, and emerging markets.

Gareth Beaver, the chief executive of Santam Specialist Solutions, described the realignment as the “natural next step” in the growth of the group’s specialist portfolio.

“Each of these sub-brands has carved out a distinct space in the market. They are known for their technical expertise, deep client insight, and specialist focus. Their success, however, was not achieved alone. It was built on a strong partnership with Santam, whose financial strength and national footprint provided the resilience and support needed to thrive, even in times of crisis,” Beaver said.

He noted that the rebranding will not affect service delivery. “There will be no changes to service team personnel, underwriter and claim teams authority and mandates, operational processes, IT systems or points of contact. You will have the same teams and the same trusted relationships. What’s changing is how we show up – with greater cohesion and purpose,” he said.

According to Beaver, the new unified identity is more than cosmetic.

“We’re simply bringing together our teams under a single brand, a common purpose and vision, a client commitment to integrated specialist risk solutions, while also preserving the specialist capabilities that define our value proposition,” he said.

“This alignment is about making it easier for our partners to do business with us. It reflects our confidence in the future, and our continued commitment to delivering expert, responsive and tailored support, backed by the strength of Santam,” he added
