The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) will host a two-day induction programme for the trustees of open medical schemes.

The training will take place online on 19 and 20 September, between 9am and 3pm.

The sessions are aimed at providing newly appointed trustees with guidance on:

  • An introduction to and compliance with the Medical Schemes Act;
  • The accreditation of brokers and healthcare providers;
  • An overview of the Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs);
  • Complaints and adjudication procedures;
  • The financial soundness of a medical scheme; and
  • An overview of healthcare and PMB costs.

The CMS said it plans to offer training sessions for the newly appointed trustees of closed schemes on 1 and 2 November. It plans to provide training for specific schemes on 5 and 26 October. The CMS did not provide details of the scheme-specific sessions.

The induction programmes will be used as a pre-requisite to register for the Advanced Leadership Programme for Trustees offered by the Gordon Institute of Business Science in collaboration with the CMS. The Advanced Leadership Programme will start in January 2024.
