Moonstone Business School of Excellence (MBSE) has launched a new online Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Financial Management degree.
The degree aims to equip students with both academic knowledge and practical skills that reflect the evolving demands of employers. According to Monique Brummer, operations manager at MBSE, the qualification integrates ethics and technology across its 30-module curriculum.
The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of topics in the field of commerce, including accounting, business management, financial management, tax, and auditing. It incorporates digital tools and applications such as accounting and project management systems aligned with learning outcomes. Some modules will also offer industry-relevant certifications.
“We teach the theory but also show students how to apply it using real-world tools. Our aim is to ensure our graduates are as employable as possible,” Brummer said.
Brummer noted the BCom was designed from the ground up to align with the current and future needs of students and employers.
“We’re not trying to turn a large ship slowly in a new direction,” she said. “This degree was designed for the time we live in – and where we’re heading. That gives us an advantage. It’s relevant now and geared for the future.”
Curriculum relevance and industry alignment
The BCom degree’s curriculum is broadly aligned with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), a global professional body in management accounting. Brummer said MBSE used CIMA’s research – based on employer feedback – to ensure the content reflects what businesses expect from graduates.
“CIMA revises its curriculum every five years to keep pace with developments in business and technology. We’ve aligned ours to meet the same standards,” she noted. “Employers are asking for graduates who are not only skilled but can work efficiently and effectively”.
The curriculum is suitable for students who want to pursue postgraduate studies in any business-related field, not only financial management. Graduates interested in pursuing the CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant) designation may qualify for exam exemptions from CIMA.
Accessible online learning
MBSE has a decade of experience delivering online education and is accredited in the distance learning mode. Brummer explained that although distance learning traditionally involved limited support, MBSE has adopted an interactive and supportive online learning model.
“We don’t have face-to-face classes, but students engage in regular live sessions, from orientation to exam preparation. Our lecturers are available during working hours via email and phone, and students often comment on how accessible and helpful they are,” she said.
Lecturers also create tutorial and explainer videos to assist students with complex concepts. These recordings are available on demand to accommodate students who may be working full-time or unable to attend live sessions.
“We offer as much flexibility as possible while still providing a strong support structure,” Brummer added.
Who should apply?
The degree is suited to both school leavers and working professionals in the commerce sector who wish to formalise their knowledge or upskill. Brummer said it is well-suited to individuals who are self-disciplined and comfortable using technology.
The qualification supports credit accumulation and transfer (CAT), which allows students who have completed relevant modules on similar qualifications to receive credit for those modules if there is sufficient overlap in content.
Admission requires a National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s degree endorsement, at least 50% in English, and 50% in Mathematics or 70% in Mathematical Literacy.
Programme duration and cost structure
The BCom can be completed over three years of full-time study or five years part-time, with a maximum duration of seven years. Students register and pay per module, and the fee includes all learning materials, including textbooks, self-assessment tools, and final exam costs.
“All the support, resources, and textbooks are included in the module fee,” Brummer said. “That makes it easier for students to budget, and there are no hidden costs.”
All assessments, including formative and final summative assessments, are submitted online. Students can study from anywhere in the world.
Applications for the first semester, beginning on 14 July, are now open.
