Moonstone Business School of Excellence (MBSE) has introduced a new learning option designed to make compliance training more accessible: Getting to Know FICA – isiXhosa.
Officially launched in September, this entry-level continuing professional development (CPD) course provides a practical pathway for professionals and support staff who need foundational training on the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA).
According to MBSE operations manager Monique Brummer, the course was developed in direct response to requests from MBSE’s clients and Moonstone Compliance, reflecting MBSE’s learner-focused approach and commitment to widening access to professional education.
“By offering compliance content in isiXhosa alongside English, MBSE is setting a new standard for accessibility in financial services training,” says Brummer.
A first for MBSE: isiXhosa language offering
Getting to Know FICA – isiXhosa is the first course MBSE has launched in isiXhosa, broadening opportunities for students who prefer to learn in their home language. Key features of the course include:
- Supporting material in isiXhosa – all study resources have been translated to ensure clarity and ease of understanding.
- English video lectures with isiXhosa subtitles – preserving content quality while making it accessible to isiXhosa speakers.
- Assessments in isiXhosa – enabling learners to demonstrate understanding in their chosen language.
- Final course evaluations and certificates in English – as required for compliance and business record-keeping.
“This model strikes a balance between accessibility and compliance standards,” says Brummer.
Course content and relevance
Accredited for 1.5 CPD points at a cost of R130 (with accreditation valid until 31 May 2026), the course introduces learners to the fundamentals of anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing obligations under South African law. Core topics include:
- Money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing.
- The legislative framework governing compliance and sanctions under FICA.
- Key components of a Risk Management and Compliance Programme.
- The role of the Financial Action Task Force and the United Nations, with discussion on South Africa’s grey listing status and measures to avoid blacklisting.
- Reporting obligations to the Financial Intelligence Centre, alongside the consequences of non-compliance.
By offering the course in isiXhosa, MBSE supports clearer understanding of complex legislative requirements and ensures that more learners can engage with compliance content in the language they are most comfortable with.
Brummer explains that the launch of Getting to Know FICA – isiXhosa represents more than just an additional course.
“For learners and institutions committed to building a stronger compliance culture, this course offers a valuable, accessible, and affordable option,” she says.
