Well done to all responsible for providing us with "Paul se perspektief – Paul's perspective" in 2011. May you enjoy the break and return afresh in 2012. And, given that you'll be back just in time for the one-day games with Sri Lanka and with the Super 15 competition imminent there'll be lots to comment on. Have a happy and peaceful Festive Season and may the New Year prove hugely rewarding in a multitude of ways.

Apologies. The above link took on a shape of it's own and doesn't work. The site can be obtained by typing the following into your internet address bar (without the inverted commas, obviously): "http://www.europcar.ie/heinekencup/".

For anyone who is interested, the following link provides an easy reference to all Heineken Cup games. Some might have seen a similar one that was available during the Rugby World Cup. It takes a couple minutes to download but it's worth a looksee: www.europcar.ie/heinekencup/utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&u

Hoe dan nou so?

It sounds like you and Bernard think the same. Possibly the shelf life of a rugby player is shorter than that of a cricketer, and most certainly that of a golfer. Yet Victor goes back into the Bulls fold immediately, with a guranteed income. I am sure that John Smit would be equally welcome in a number of similar capacities. Then of course, our beloved, soon to be ex-coach again stated that rugby and dancing are both contact sports, just different. I know that business skills are being taught to the younger players. Maybe with the right "retirement" planning, some of the older guys will find it easier to bow out at the right age?

Hi Bernard, thanks for your views. A thought just occurred to me. Is John Smit's decency not perhaps the reason why we did not dive (pun intended) to the same level of illegality as Pocock and McCaw? Would Vicot matfield for instance have instructed the Bok loosies to transgress to the same extent that the Aussies did as they were allowed to do so by the ref?

So, moes hy vroër opgehou het?
* Mike Schutte.

The older I get, the better I used to be!"

Groete

Regarding the right time to quit, World Cup type competitions (in their many and varied forms) have some impact. On the plus side they can present the aging competitor with an "acceptable" retirement point. Consequently we tend to see a percentage of sportsmen vacating the scene soon after such events. The downside, however, is that at times this provides the sportsman who should have opted out earlier with the excuse to carry on a little longer. The former often pushes the just-in-time limit to its maximum and the latter often sees people stay on the field of play way beyond their sell-by date. But then there's golf which because of the Seniors tour caters for both ends. But I couldn't see something similar working in too many other sports.

For once I disagree with much of your comment as its different strokes (forgive the play on cricket terminology) for different sports. For instance if John Smit and Habana had had the grace to retire when they should have instead of playing for the receipt of undeserved match fees for the last two years, we could quite possibly, as it turns out, have won the World Cup.
